✍ We are currently using a third-party delivery company in an effort to provide a faster and more efficient service to our customers. We always book door to door delivery and verify that the driver has the correct change for your order. We also pay the driver any additional parking fees he might incur if you live in an apartment building. So, please do not give him any additional money if he asks for it.
After 1.5 years in Saigon, Chef/Owner Doug Stratton found the one thing he was craving from home was “good” Mexican food. Coming from Southern California, he grew up eating at the local taquerias (taco stand or restaurant) where it was common to see 3 generations of the family operating it, with the “abuela” or grandmother, heading the kitchen.
After visiting several of the limited number of Mexican restaurants in the Saigon his cravings for “authentic” Mexican food had not been satisfied. In need of a job, his girlfriend suggested opening a taco stand and 18 days later Gringo Tacos came to life in the Ben Thanh Street Food Market in March of 2017.
Trying to honor the quality Mexican food he grew up with, Chef Doug uses only the freshest and highest quality ingredients available, even visiting the local markets every morning to select the best produce available. Being located in Vietnam, it is impossible to drive to the local market and buy all of the necessary ingredients needed to make “authentic” Mexican food. Gringo Tacos y Cantina uses a large variety of imported ingredients and they make everything from scratch, in house. Most important is the “Maseca,” or corn masa flour, used to make their fresh corn tortillas and tortilla chips, using a tortilla rolling machine imported from Mexico. Their other notable homemade items are queso fresco (fresh cheese), Mexican crema, and all of their sauces and salsas.
In January 2018, they added their second location, Gringo Tacos y Cantina, which features an expanded menu and bar. Chef Doug has always enjoyed craft beers and brings some of Saigon’s favorite craft beers to the new cantina. The cantina also has one of the most extensive collections of Tequila in Saigon and serves a selection of margaritas and Mexican cocktails alongside classic cocktails.
